2007 Katsina state and Murtala Safana
AS the year 2007 rapidly approaches, attention of the electorates in Katsina state, and Nigeria in general, is gradually being shitted, to those who would contest for various elective posts, at the federal, state or Local Governments level. Of special interst, to the writer of this piece is who occupies the number one lelective post in Katsina state, once again in its journey to democracy. It is to say the least, that aspirants across the state, have since been engaged in some covert and overt operations, aimed at wooing support, for their desirous acts. However, from the look of things, one could say, some of them are dead serious of their intention, Some are mere jokers, while others are definitely spoilers, hence the dire need, for careful scrutiny, to differentiate chaff from the grain, in determining who succeeds Governor Umarau Musa Yar'adua. This is especially so, looking at the striking achievements recorded over the last six years, by the incumbent administration in the state.
With the above as a back ground the writer of this piece, makes bold his intent to make a case for one of the states son in the Diaspora - Murtala Ibrahim Safana, tobe seriously considered for the coveted seat, when the die is finally casted. Like the great Shakespeare have said, "Some are born great, others achieve greatness in life. While some have greatness thrust upon them." People with this personality traits among which the personality under focus is rightly placed, are not only respected, adored and cherished but revered, because of their high sense of moral value, selfless service to mankind, humility and compassion - qualities that are a must for any body aspiring for leadership position. Any body with a casual knowledge of who Murtala Safana is will agree with this writer, that the surely fits into the group of people highlighted above; therefore competent enough to vie for a Governorship post, in a state like ours.
It is the common hope and prayer, of an ordinary Bakatsine or Badauri today to have somebody at the helm of the state's leadership in the very near future, who will not only ensure the sustenance of the present tempo created by the incumbent Governor, in running the state, but make an attempt to surpass the status quo.
In view of the socio-political and economic peculiarities of Katsina state therefore, it needs the professional touch of a politician who can serve as a link between the citizens of the state abound in the two great Emirates of Katsina and Daura, and of course somebody who can restore the mush needed confidence in the state and the country's journey to democracy. Murtala Safana evidently and surely meets this qualification. He is past becoming a house hold name, not only among the politicians in Katsina state themselves, but by extension the good citizens of Katsina state, whose lives have been touched positively in various ways, at various times by this promising politicians. The man surely has a lot, going for him, as a contender to the office of a governor in a state like Katsina. Youthful energy, Godliness, striking credentials and the capacity to win the trust of Katsina and Daurawa, are all leaning towards him.
It may not be easy for Murtala Safana to succumb to pressure, from Some of us who saw a messiah in him, to join the gubernatorial race, the writer however feels he has to, looking at the fact that interest of our dear state should be placed above all other interest, hence the need for him to respond positively to the intense-pressure emanating from across the state. For when good leaders with promising potentialities refuse to present themselves for election, for the fear of trading on the corns o other peoples ambition, the ordinary people will surely be the worse for it, by being at the receiving end. Katsina state for sure, cannot afford to be led by some played out leaders with played out ideas.
We should not forget that, evidence of the importance of public office, and the gravity of its position, comes from what has been reported from the messenger of Allah (SWT), who emphasized the need for the best with leadership qualities to be at the helm. Therefore, if things are to go normal by taking their natural shape, authority is to be given to a person who is called upon to take it. But whom ever is seen struggling hard to be noticed, for the purpose of being entrusted which the authority, must be viewed with reservation and suspicion, for he may be operating under the quite of selfishness, greed and desire to promote his parochial interest.
It is a common adage that, "one should not make haste to do a thing before its time, nor put it off, when the right moment arrives." In as much as the above assertion is true, the writer strongly feels, Murtala who from all indications is inspired by vision, wisdom and desire to serve, should come out of his shell the soonest, to formally let the cat out of the bag, to declare his intention to vie the number one elective post in the state. When Katsina state has Murtala Safana as Governor, we will then be able to consolidate more, on the dividends abound in democracy, as so far put in place by the incumbent administration of Governor Yar'adua, for "Juma'ar da za tayi kyau tun daga Laraba ake ganeta".
