The Future of Katsina Varsity

For years, Katsina state has been known as the best state in the Northern Nigeria that concentrates in the field of Education and also one of the best in the country. But yet the state commissioned its first University which is owned by the Katsina Islamic Foundation.

After the establishment of the University, and kicking off its Educational activities, Katsina state Government set up a committee that will submit a report on establishing a state owned University in order to boost educational activities in the state. Right now in Katsina State, the School of Basics and Remedial Studies (SBRS) is situated in Funtua town and is owned by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), besides that in Funtua town is also College of Administration. In Dutsinma also there Isah Kaita College of Education, and in the city of Daura, there is the school of Legal Studies; there is also Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic and also Federal College of Education in the city of Katsina town.

The main aim of this write-up is to make a highlight on the future challenge in the Educational and also the Economic sector of the state.

Should Katsina State Government take over the Katsina Islamic University from the founders and chief financers Katsina Islamic Foundation or not, the University should put into consideration some of the important fields of study that the society, the state and the nation will benefit from which starts from the field of Agriculture, Information and Communication Technology, Industrial Engineering and other important fields of study that is in competition globally.

Katsina State have many farmers, and also fertile land that supports all types of farming, Katsina state produce agricultural products that’s is grown in all the parts of the Northern Nigeria, But we don’t have an Agricultural Research Institute/Centre that will make research on new technologies and methods in the field of Agriculture. Many farmers lack the knowledge of the latest development and technology in the field of Agriculture and that makes them to lose a lot in their farms.

Information and Communication Technology is one of the leading and challenging fields in the educational sector today, so therefore, there is need to improve in this field in order to meet the standards of the other developed countries. The state can also improve the ICT sector by opening ICT parks within the major towns across the state, there are also some other vocational courses such as Cisco Networking Academy Program (CNAP), Microsoft Certifications and a host of others that not only ICT students can do these courses also business people and other individuals interested in the field can do it.

In Katsina State, the numbers of Industries that are still functioning are countable, how many private Industries do we have in the state? There are many reasons behind these problems which one of them is lack of Industrial Engineers. I therefore call on the University to put these problems into consideration. If these problems will be solved, Katsina State will be competing with other states in the field of Commerce and Industries and also the States Economy and income will grow.

I would like to commend the Effort of Katsina Islamic Foundation and Katsina State Government for a job well-done in ensuring that Katsina State is still leading in the field of Education in the Northern part of the country.
