Evaluate to Motivate...
My Club's president Tony Sabastian conducted an Evaluation session during the last meeting I attended and thought I share with you all the notes I took down during the session.

To be a good evaluator, Listening is important, there are myths about evaluation that we tend to overlook; some of them are:
- the speaker is more advanced than me
- my job is to tell the speaker what he did right or wrong
- sandwich technique (Good, Bad and Concluding with Good)
Because the role of evaluator in Toastmasters is misunderstood, the evaluator is to:
- give the speaker feedback in regards the speakers speech
- tell the speaker what went well and suggest how he improve the effectiveness of the speech (Present ideas to him)
- if part of the speech is good and another is bad, it demoralizes the speaker, however, you can tell him what is good and what could make the speech better is more inspiring.
Another thing Toastmasters forget is the use of its motto in eveluation ("Better Lietening, Better thinking and Better Speaking") I will take the three of them at a time.
LISTENING
This is the key to being a Toastmaster, You need to listen to the speaker, the following must be listened to while evaluating a speaker's speech.
- Language: Hear the grammer, the speaker's tone, Listen to figures of speech used.
- Message: Is there any message in his speech? Listen between the line to the intention of the speaker
- Your Reaction: Listen to Physical, Mental and emotional feelings in the speech.
THINKING
In this part, we apply the sandwich technique, The sandwich technique highlights
- what the evaluator saw, heard and felt
- Use the contest approach, Content, Organisation and Delivery
- Follow the speaker's Introduction, Body and Conclusion
- Evaluate based on Speeck Objective given by the manual he is using.
SPEAKING
As an evaluator, you are to evaluate by deliverying a speech. (Frame of mind).
