NIGCOMSAT-1 and the Future of our Graduates

The Nigerian Communications Limited just launched the country’s satellite called NIGCOMSAT-1 in China on Sunday 13th May, 2007.This is a Great achievement by a country like Nigeria, a country that is developing in the field of ICT and Engineering.

Also, the Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Limited, Mr. Ahmed Rufai told newsmen that the country is targeting to have 10 more fleets in the orbit before the NIGCOMSAT-1 expires by 2022. NIGCOMSAT-1 will bring a lot of development in the ICT, not only to Nigeria but to other Sub-Saharan African countries.

I was pleased to see that Nigerian Communication Satellite is launched because there will be an employment opportunity for our graduates in the field of ICT and Engineering, I was thinking of the advantages of the Satellite when I discussed it with a friend who suddenly said to me that, “How many of our Graduates have the technical knowledge of using such a technology that Nigeria launched in China?”. Then we started debating on this matter till we started blaming our Educational Sector of the Country.

Most of our Graduates in the field of ICT and Engineering have no prior knowledge on how these communication equipments functions and also the practical knowledge of Managing and maintenance. Nigerian Universities should be able to produce high quality of graduates with Basic Technical knowledge on operating such High-Tech equipments.

One of the problems I think affects our graduates is the Curriculum that is being used in the tertiary level of Education in the country. Nigerian Universities cannot meet up to the standards of the other universities in the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and other Asian universities because of the curriculum that is being used in Nigerian system is outdated.

Weeks ago, the National Association of Computer Science Students called on the Nigerian Universities Commission to revisit the curriculum that is being used in Nigerian Universities because it is not upto the standard that they can compete with the foreign universities.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Communications Limited, Mr. Ahmed Rufai said in an Interview that Nigeria is developing gradually the local manpower to build its own satellite here in Nigeria. How can that be possible without a very good funding of Research and Development and also our Tertiary Institutions? The only possibility is through funding and making necessary facilities available for our local engineers to make research and design such a project. If these facilities are available, the maintenance can be done here in Nigeria as well.

I am calling the attention of the Federal Government, Nigeria Communications Limited, Nigerian Communications Commission, Nigerian Universities Commission, Our Financial Institutions (Banks) and other ICT firms to heavily invest in the ICT sector of the economy, because we need to tackle the problem our Educational Institutions are facing in the above sector so that our graduates can b able to compete in the global market of the ICT.
