Enyimba overruns Hearts of Oak in Ghana
The People's Elephant on Sunday kicked off an impressive campaign by defeating Accra Hearts of Oak of Ghana at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium in their first group stage encounter of this year's CAF Champions League.
The CAF Champions League two time winners faced a tough clash as the hosts gave an impressive performance and showed why they were winners in 2000, but a 13th minute superb header from Foster Amadi and an own goal from Heart's Kwabena Boafa in the second half settled all rivalry abounded as the Ghanaians hopes came crumbling at their temporary home ground in Obuasi.
Skipper of the People's Elephant, Dele Aiyenugba shined when he saved Heart's Daniel Quaye's retaken penalty after the centre referee ordered a retake of the first spot kick awarded due to infringements.
It will be recalled that Enyimba had defeated the Ghanaian side with the same scoreline two years ago as both sides battled for the CAF Super Cup Trophy in Aba, Nigeria.
Hearts were playing at Obuasi because of renovations to the national stadium in Accra ahead of Ghana's hosting of the 2008 African Nations Cup finals.
The other Group B match between South Africa's Orlando Pirates and ASEC Abidjan of the Ivory Coast will be played in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Pirates were allowed to postpone their game because they played Manchester United in a friendly in Durban on Saturday.
